Using scientific models, the team was unable to determine precisely how much more likely climate change had made the floods. Changing circulation patterns driven by global warming are also increasing rainfall intensity, the analysis noted. Global warming was the only remaining reason they could identify to explain the heavier downpour. However, the focus must be on slowing climate change, she added. “While we can’t stop El Niño, we can stop climate change,” Otto said.

CNN —US highway safety regulators are investigating an apparent hidden feature in Tesla’s Autopilot software that can reportedly disable the safety prompts Tesla gives to drivers to keep their hands on the steering wheel. The regulators are demanding information from the automaker about whether consumers could try to circumvent the safety controls on Tesla’s driver-assist technology. A Tesla Model Y is seen on a Tesla car lot on May 31, 2023 in Austin, Texas. Tesla's Model Y has become the world's best selling car in the first quarter of 2023. The first, scheduled for September, involves a 2019 crash in California that saw a Tesla Model 3 driving off of a highway and slamming into a tree at high speed.

CNN —In the classic 1999 film, “Election,” the high school student government vote has everything: naked ambition, campaign poster shredding, ballot manipulation, infidelity and more. But what the gifted writer Tom Perotta likely couldn’t imagine was an election in which two unpopular candidates square off for president. That doesn’t happen in high school, even in a satirical movie. The president supports stripping that state of its first-in-the-nation primary status in favor of South Carolina, the state that energized Biden’s 2020 campaign. “In the runup to the 2024 elections, Democrats plan to put the Supreme Court on trial,” wrote David Mark.

New York CNN —The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into model year 2022 and 2023 Tesla Model X SUVs because there may be a problem with their front seatbelt attachments. NHTSA will launch an investigation when there’s reason to believe there may be a safety issue requiring action such as a recall. While the investigation applies to about 50,000 Model X vehicles, the problem has been found on only two, according to NHTSA’s report of the investigation. In that case, the safety recall was done using an over-the-air software update. If NHTSA finds that the seatbelt situation requires a recall, that would probably require manual work by a Tesla technician.
New York CNN —Tesla is recalling 3,470 2022-2023 Model Y cars due to bolts in the second-row seat back frames not being secured properly. On Model Y vehicles, the second-row driver- and passenger-side seat back frames are secured with four bolts per seat back. Tesla found five warranty claims regarding the bolts since last December, but is not aware of any injuries or deaths due to it. Tesla will inspect the bolts and tighten them if necessary for free of charge, and owner notification letters will be mailed. Tesla will attempt to fix the feature, which costs $15,000, through an over-the-air software update, the notice added.
New York CNN —Tesla is recalling nearly 363,000 vehicles with its so-called “Full Self Driving” driver assist feature due to risks it can pose at intersections, even if the driver is paying attention and ready to take over control of the car. Tesla will attempt to fix the the FSD feature, which costs $15,000, through an over-the-air software update, the notice added. NHTSA itself has identified at least 273 crashes that involved one of Tesla’s driver assist systems. Tesla owners have filed a class-action lawsuit over the predictions and missed deadlines, which is still pending. Tesla, which has disbanded its public relations staff and has not responded to press inquiries for several years, could not be reached for comment.
New York CNN —Electric carmaker Tesla will face a hit on Super Bowl Sunday, when an ad will play showing the alleged dangers of its Full Self-Driving technology. The ad is part of a multimillion dollar advertising campaign by The Dawn Project. The ad cost $598,000, a Dawn Project spokesperson told CNN. “Tesla’s Full Self-Driving is endangering the public,” the ad said. “Tesla’s reckless deployment of Full Self-Driving software on public roads is a major threat to public safety.
The Tesla’s driver told authorities that the vehicle’s “full self-driving” software braked unexpectedly and triggered the pileup on Thanksgiving day. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration then announced that it was sending a special crash investigation team to examine the incident. It’s delighted some Tesla drivers but also alarmed others with its flaws. The benefit and promise of Autopilot is clear from the Vehicle Safety Report data that we have been sharing for 4 years,” Tesla said this month in an update to its vehicle safety data. Reimer said it remains to be seen if there’s a recall of any Tesla driver-assist features, and what it means for the automaker’s future.
CNN —Federal regulators want to know what Elon Musk meant in a Tweet about disabling driver alerts on Tesla’s “Full Self Driving” driver assist system. On December 31, Musk replied to a tweet by @WholeMarsBlog that said “users with more than 10,000 miles on FSD Beta should be given the option to turn off the steering wheel nag.”“Agreed, update coming in Jan,” Musk replied. NHTSA says the issue falls under the agency’s existing investigation into the performance of Tesla’s driver assist systems. “The investigation opening was motivated by an accumulation of crashes in which Tesla vehicles, operating with Autopilot engaged, struck stationary in-road or roadside first responder vehicles tending to pre-existing collision scenes,” reads the summary of the investigation which opened in June. The federal inquiry into the tweet was first reported by the Associated Press.
REUTERS/Shannon Stapleton/File PhotoThe Silicon Valley automaker sells a $15,000 software add-on called “Full Self-Driving” (FSD) which enables its vehicles to change lanes and park autonomously. That complements its standard “Autopilot” feature which enables cars to steer, accelerate and brake within their lanes without driver intervention. A completely autonomous vehicle would require regulatory approval. “It’s a separate matter as to will it have regulatory approval. It won’t have regulatory approval at that time,” he added.
